Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has agreed to settle two major disputes involving the National Stock Exchange (NSE). These are the co-location case and the dark fibre case, which together amount to ₹1,491.21 crore. This marks one of the largest settlements in India’s financial market history.

According to SEBI’s demand letter, NSE must pay ₹1,223.56 crore for the co-location case and ₹267.65 crore for the dark fibre case. Out of this, the exchange will make a fresh deposit of ₹714.74 crore. These cases had been under investigation for several years and had created uncertainty around NSE’s operations.

The co-location case was linked to allegations that certain brokers gained unfair access to NSE’s trading systems, giving them faster trade execution. The dark fibre case involved concerns about exclusive connectivity advantages. Both matters had raised questions about transparency and fairness in India’s capital markets.

The timing of this settlement is crucial. NSE recently filed its draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) for a public listing. By resolving these long-standing issues, the exchange can now move ahead with greater confidence and focus on its future plans.

This settlement is expected to restore investor trust and bring more stability to India’s financial ecosystem. It also signals SEBI’s intent to close pending disputes and strengthen market integrity.
