Donald Trump has sparked global attention by suggesting that the Strait of Hormuz be renamed “Trump Strait” after claiming US control of the crucial waterway. His statement came soon after American strikes on Iranian military assets that killed civilians and raised tensions in West Asia.
The US Central Command confirmed attacks on air defence systems, radar, maritime facilities and communications linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. Iranian officials said a wedding in Sirik was hit, killing four people including two children. Washington denied targeting civilians.
Iran retaliated with missile strikes on US bases in Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain and Iraq. Saudi Arabia accused Iran of attacking an oil tanker. The renewed fighting pushed oil prices up by 4%.
