India has taken a major step in defence self reliance by approving the transfer of missile technologies developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation to private companies. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh cleared the proposal which allows Indian industry to manufacture advanced missile systems. This decision is expected to reduce imports, boost local production and create new opportunities for small and medium enterprises.

The technologies include systems such as ASTRA air to air missile, RUDRAM anti radiation missile, NAG anti tank missile, very short range air defence system and naval anti ship missile. By opening these technologies to industry, the government aims to strengthen the domestic supply chain and ensure lifecycle support for critical defence equipment.

This move is part of the larger Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision in defence. It builds on reforms like the Defence Acquisition Procedure, positive indigenisation lists and defence corridors. Simplified licensing, foreign investment rules and improved testing infrastructure have already encouraged private participation.

Industry experts believe this transfer will not only enhance local value addition but also create export potential. Indigenous production will make India more resilient against global supply disruptions and strengthen its strategic edge.

The decision marks a turning point where missile development shifts from laboratories to industrial scale manufacturing, ensuring jobs, innovation and a stronger defence ecosystem for the nation.
