India is moving fast towards self‑reliance in defence, with electronics at the centre of this effort. The government’s sixth Positive Indigenisation List has identified 405 items worth nearly ₹3,070 crore. This figure shows opportunity but does not guarantee orders. Companies must clear strict testing, prove reliability, and secure repeat supplies before building sustainable businesses.

A recent order of ₹585.76 crore placed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) with Data Patterns highlights how private suppliers can benefit. BEL alone accounts for more than 50% of the items on the list, covering radar, electronic warfare, satellite communication, and imaging systems. This makes BEL a crucial customer for new entrants in the sector.

Despite the promise, challenges remain. Defence manufacturing involves high qualification costs, heavy working capital needs, and uncertain demand. Even firms with strong margins face pressure due to expensive development and testing. Access to advanced technologies, such as gallium‑nitride chip designs from DRDO, is critical for growth. Foreign partnerships can help but often limit upgrades and exports.

Shared testing facilities under the Defence Testing Infrastructure Scheme provide support, but utilisation is essential. Financing also remains tough, though the government’s ₹1 lakh crore RDI scheme aims to ease gaps.

Defence electronics can be rewarding, but only for firms that combine innovation, patient investment, and reliable delivery. Success will depend on repeat orders and long‑term trust.
