National Stock Exchange of India has successfully marked its long anticipated debut on Dalal Street, wrapping up a decade long wait to join the ranks of listed companies. Shares began trading on the rival BSE and saw a steady opening, advancing up to 5% intraday before settling 1.85% higher at ₹1,818 per share.

With this closing price, the market valuation of the country’s leading exchange stands at ₹4.5 lakh crore, or roughly $46.9 billion. This valuation firmly establishes the bourse among the top ten most valuable publicly traded exchanges globally.

The ₹22,560 crore public issue represents the second largest IPO ever witnessed in the Indian capital markets, surpassed only by Hyundai Motor India’s 2024 offering. The transaction was purely an offer for sale, meaning the institution raised no fresh capital for internal use. Despite measured participation from retail investors, overall appetite remained healthy, leading to an oversubscription of 5.7 times. Following the debut, global brokerage Macquarie began tracking the stock with an “outperform” stance, highlighting growth opportunities in newly launched market segments.

Currently, the bourse handles around 93% of cash equity trading and 75% of options turnover across the country. While tighter regulatory rules have slowed the derivatives business, the listing highlights strong investor confidence in India’s financial sector
