Fraudsters are using a new frozen screen trick to cheat UPI users. Victims suddenly see their phone screen freeze or show an error. Soon after, they receive a call from someone pretending to be bank or payment support. These callers convince users to install fake apps or APK files. Once installed, these apps secretly read SMS, OTPs and notifications. Criminals then trick victims into approving UPI payments themselves, making the fraud look genuine.

Experts explain that UPI is not directly hacked. Instead, scammers manipulate users into sharing access. They use advanced tools like deepfake voices, cloned customer care numbers and local language messages to appear authentic. Stolen money is quickly moved through mule accounts to hide the trail.

Users are advised to stay alert. Never install unverified apps or share UPI PINs, OTPs or passwords. Avoid granting remote access to strangers. Always verify customer care numbers through official bank apps or websites. A frozen screen does not mean compromise, so avoid panic.

If targeted, disconnect internet immediately and report the case. Victims should call 1930 or file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. Banks must also be informed quickly to secure accounts. Preserving call logs and transaction details helps investigators trace fraud.

This scam highlights the need for caution while using digital payments. Awareness and quick reporting remain the strongest defence against such tricks.
