India’s ev sales hit 2.98 lakh units in August

India’s electric vehicle retail sales rose 52.9% year on year to 2,98,448 units in August 2026, according to FADA data. EV penetration also increased to 12.3% from 9.5% a year ago. Electric two wheelers led the growth, with sales rising 67.05%. Electric commercial vehicles recorded the fastest growth, with sales nearly tripling during the month.

All four major EV categories, including two wheelers, three wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles, recorded their highest August sales. Electric three wheeler sales increased 25.28% year on year to 79,846 units, while passenger EV sales rose 51.89% to 30,696 units.

Electric commercial vehicle sales jumped 188.3% to 4,702 units, making it the fastest growing EV category. Its market penetration also increased to 5.18% from 2.06% last year.

Electric two wheelers remained the biggest contributor, accounting for more than 60% of total EV retail sales. TVS Motor led the segment, followed by Bajaj Auto and Ather Energy.

The strong August performance shows that electric mobility is gaining wider acceptance in India. Rising demand, better charging infrastructure and lower running costs are supporting the shift towards EVs.
