EPFO Updates Policy for Bank Passbook and Cheque Leaf Uploads: Details Inside

The Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has revised its rules regarding the submission of images of validated bank passbooks or cheque leaves for certain eligible claims. To verify claims, the EPFO will now employ additional verification methods such as:

  • Online Bank KYC Verification: The EPFO will directly check KYC details with your bank or the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
  • Employer Verification via DSC: Employers can use a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) to verify your bank account details.
  • Aadhaar Number Verification: The UIDAI will validate the Aadhaar number linked to your bank account.

These measures aim to expedite the online claim settlement process and reduce the rejection rate due to missing images of attested bank passbooks or cheque leaves.

According to the EPFO circular dated May 28, 2024, the organization has decided to relax the mandatory requirement for uploading these images in certain eligible cases. This decision, approved by the CPFC, is based on validations such as Online Bank KYC Verification by the concerned bank/NPCI, Bank KYC Verification by the employer using DSC, and Aadhaar Number Verification by UIDAI.

Did EPFO Specify Eligibility Requirements? The EPFO might not have detailed the eligibility requirements. However, some possible criteria include:

  • Validated Bank Data: If your bank data has already been verified through KYC or other methods, you might not need to submit additional documentation.
  • Claim Amount: The relaxation could apply to claims below a certain threshold.

Typically, the ideal supporting document for an EPF claim is an original, canceled check with your name, bank account number, and IFSC code prominently displayed. This serves as confirmation of your bank account details. If your bank account lacks cheque book functionality, you can submit a copy of your bank passbook’s first page, duly authenticated by the bank manager, including your bank account number and IFSC code.

How to Submit an Online Claim? You can file an online claim through the EPFO member portal. Here’s a general guideline:

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Have a valid Universal Account Number (UAN) and be a registered member.
  • Your Aadhaar number and bank account number, along with other KYC details, should be seeded and validated in your UAN account.

Filing an Online Claim:

  1. Visit the EPFO member portal at EPFO Member Portal and enter your UAN and password.
  2. Navigate to the “Claim” section of the member portal.
  3. Choose the type of claim you are submitting (e.g., pension, full settlement, etc.).
  4. Verify the pre-filled KYC information based on your submitted data. Update any discrepancies.
  5. Depending on the circumstances and recent relaxations, online verification techniques might be used instead of uploading documents.
  6. In some cases, you might still need to upload scanned copies of documents, such as a canceled check or an attested copy of a bank passbook (refer to the EPFO website for the latest information on required documents).
  7. After verifying and validating the information, submit the claim.

You can track the progress of your claim application through the portal. For future reference, keep a copy of the online claim you filed. If you encounter any issues, contact the EPFO helpdesk for assistance. These steps will help expedite the online claim submission process. Always check the official EPFO website for the most recent updates.
