State Bank of India (SBI) reported a strong performance in the second quarter, supported by healthy growth in earnings and improvement in asset quality. The country’s largest lender posted a net profit of ₹23,038 crore, up 14.3% from ₹20,160 crore in the same period last year. The bank’s net interest income also rose 14.3% year-on-year to ₹49,143 crore compared to ₹42,847 crore, reflecting steady growth in its core lending business.
SBI continued to strengthen its balance sheet with lower bad loans during the quarter. Gross non-performing assets (NPA) improved to 1.39% from 1.47% in the previous quarter, while net NPA declined to 0.36% from 0.38%. The improvement highlights better credit quality and effective recovery efforts by the bank.
However, operating profit saw a slight decline. SBI reported operating profit of ₹26,937 crore, down 1.4% from ₹27,311 crore recorded a year ago. Despite this marginal fall, the bank delivered strong overall profitability, driven by robust growth in interest income and lower stress in its loan book.
The Q2 numbers indicate that SBI remains on a strong growth path, supported by stable business momentum, healthy earnings expansion and continued improvement in asset quality. Investors are likely to watch future growth and margins closely in the coming quarters.
