SEBI chief discusses India’s capital needs and market reforms

At the SBI Conclave, SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey said India’s expanding economy needs a larger pool of capital to sustain its growth. He explained that India’s aspirations are vast and require strong financing for infrastructure, MSMEs, and enterprises. As the economy diversifies, financing needs are evolving, and both banks and capital markets are working together to meet the country’s capital requirements.

Pandey mentioned that SEBI has introduced several measures to strengthen the futures and options market. The regulator is also studying ways to reduce margin requirements for longer‑term derivative contracts to improve liquidity and participation.

He pointed out that despite reforms, F&O losses among retail investors remain high, showing the need for better risk management and investor awareness. Pandey added that India’s economic growth continues to be encouraging, supported by strong policy initiatives and expanding business opportunities.

The SEBI chief also spoke about the transformative role of artificial intelligence in reshaping business models and market operations. He said technology is driving efficiency and transparency across financial systems.

His remarks reflected SEBI’s commitment to balancing growth, stability, and innovation in India’s capital markets while ensuring that regulatory frameworks evolve to support the nation’s long‑term economic ambitions.
