Sensex and Nifty crashed today, wiping out over ₹4 lakh crore investor wealth as global weakness and profit booking triggered heavy selling. The Sensex fell nearly 1,000 points to 73,771 while Nifty slipped 300 points to 22,861, marking sharp declines across large, mid and small-cap indices.
Investor wealth dropped as the market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms fell to ₹468 lakh crore from ₹472 lakh crore in the previous session. Midcap index declined 0.75% and smallcap index slipped 1%, showing broad-based weakness.
The fall was mainly due to three factors. First, weak global cues as concerns over economic slowdown and geopolitical tensions weighed on sentiment. Second, profit booking after recent rallies added to selling pressure. Third, broad-based decline across sectors including midcaps and smallcaps amplified losses.
Experts say short-term volatility may continue as global uncertainties persist. They advise cautious trading and focusing on quality stocks with strong fundamentals. Long-term investors may see corrections as opportunities to accumulate at lower levels.
The sharp fall highlights how external factors and investor caution can quickly erode wealth in Indian markets.
