After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with President Donald Trump, the US committed to helping India build US-designed nuclear reactors. This support is crucial for India to scale up its nuclear energy capacity and meet the rising demand for cleaner power. The collaboration aims to transfer technology and localize production, boosting India’s nuclear power potential.

India’s current nuclear power capacity is 8,180 MW, projected to grow to 22.48 GW by 2031-32 and eventually to 100 GW by 2047. To achieve this, India has announced a National Nuclear Energy Mission with a budget of Rs 20,000 crore. The recent Budget also includes amendments to the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act to allow private participation.

The partnership between India and the US is expected to strengthen global energy security and policy. The International Energy Agency (IEA) supports a nuclear power resurgence. This collaboration will help India achieve its clean energy goals and ensure a reliable power supply.
