India’s passenger vehicle inventories have risen to nearly 33 to 35 days ahead of the festive season, crossing the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations’ recommended level of 21 days. Retail demand continues to show strength, yet dealers are cautious about offering discounts, keeping them limited despite higher stock.

Passenger vehicle registrations grew 19.13% year on year in July, crossing the four lakh mark for the first time. Rural demand rose 24.72%, outpacing urban growth of 15.76%. Wholesale dispatches between January and July stood at 30.47 lakh units, while retail sales were 30.35 lakh units, showing a narrow gap but reflecting inventory build‑up.

Automakers increased dispatches sharply in August, up 36.5% to 439,309 units, while exports fell 17% as companies focused on domestic stocking. Production also surged 25.7% year on year in August to 454,266 units, with utility vehicle output rising 28.3%.

Nearly one fourth of dealers are carrying more than 25% aged stock, raising concerns about oversupply. Rising commodity costs add pressure on margins, making manufacturers reluctant to expand discounts.

Industry outlook remains positive with strong consumer confidence, resilient rural demand and supportive financing conditions expected to drive festive sales. However, maintaining inventory discipline will be crucial to balance production and profitability.
