India’s automobile industry witnessed a strong performance in August with passenger vehicle sales rising sharply to 4.39 lakh units, a 37% increase compared to the same month last year. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers reported total vehicle sales at 25 lakh units, reflecting a 13.8% year‑on‑year growth and highlighting resilient consumer demand.
Two‑wheelers continued to dominate volumes, recording 20.3 lakh units sold, up 10.5% from last year. The three‑wheeler segment also showed notable expansion, with sales reaching 93,764 units, a 22.8% rise, indicating growing demand for affordable urban transport solutions.
Exports added further strength to the industry’s performance. Total vehicle exports stood at 6.81 lakh units, registering a 22.2% growth, underlining India’s increasing role as a competitive global automotive hub.
Industry experts believe the upcoming festive season, new product launches, and easing supply chain pressures will sustain momentum in the months ahead. Passenger vehicles, particularly SUVs, remain the key growth driver, while two‑wheelers are expected to benefit from rural recovery and improved financing availability.
The robust August numbers reflect strong domestic consumption and rising global competitiveness, positioning India’s auto sector for continued expansion despite challenges from rising input costs and global uncertainties.
