The stock market witnessed an unusual twist on Monday when the Nifty 50 index suddenly rose by nearly 200 points during the closing auction, while the Sensex remained steady. This sharp move was linked to the newly introduced Closing Auction Session, which replaced the earlier system of calculating closing prices based on the last half hour of trading.

Under the new method, closing prices are set through a 15‑minute auction where buy and sell orders are matched at levels that allow maximum trades. Because of thin liquidity and fewer sell orders, several heavyweight Nifty stocks such as Grasim, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Asian Paints, Bajaj Auto, SBI, Tata Steel, Titan, Power Grid and Eicher Motors closed higher than their levels at 3:15 pm. Grasim alone gained nearly three percent, contributing strongly to the index jump.

The Sensex did not show a similar rise. Experts explained that institutional investors are more active on the NSE, while the BSE remains largely retail‑driven. With fewer institutional trades on the BSE, auction prices stayed closer to normal levels.

Market watchers believe this sudden surge was not a sign of fresh buying interest but a structural effect of the auction system. Analysts expect participation to improve as institutions adapt, though some caution that imbalances could cause distortions, especially on expiry days.

In short, the Nifty’s sharp rise was mechanical rather than sentimental, highlighting challenges in India’s new closing auction framework.
