India’s crude oil import basket surged to $131.19 a barrel on Tuesday, marking its highest level since March 23. The sharp rise reflects growing concerns over potential supply disruptions in global energy markets.

The increase coincides with the US House advancing the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. The legislation could empower President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on nations purchasing Russian oil and gas, raising uncertainty for major importers like India.

Adding to the pressure, Saudi Arabia’s East‑West pipeline closure has intensified supply worries. India’s crude basket averaged $111.71 a barrel between September 1 and September 15, nearly 24% higher than the August average, underscoring the steep climb in costs.

Crude import prices serve as a critical indicator for India’s broader economic outlook. Rising prices directly impact the import bill, inflation risks, and fiscal stability. Analysts caution that sustained high levels could widen the current account deficit and weigh on growth prospects.

With India importing more than 85% of its crude needs, the surge in basket prices highlights the vulnerability of its energy security to geopolitical tensions and supply shocks. Policymakers face mounting challenges in balancing affordability with demand.
