India faces a healthcare gap of nearly one lakh beds, creating strong growth opportunities for hospital chains. Apollo Hospitals and Max Healthcare are expanding aggressively to meet rising demand. Apollo plans to add 3,475 beds by FY30, while Max targets 10,000 beds from its current 6,100. India has only 0.5 beds per 1,000 people, far below global standards.

High-acuity care in oncology, neurology and cardiology is driving Apollo’s inpatient revenue, while Max benefits from its metro presence. Medical tourism is also boosting earnings, with Apollo earning 8% of revenue from international patients and Max reporting ₹247 crore from overseas, up 18% year on year.

Financially, Apollo posted Q1 FY27 revenue of ₹7,092 crore, up 20.57%, with profit at ₹610 crore, up 38.32%. Max reported ₹2,406 crore revenue, up 16.57%, with profit at ₹323 crore, up 4.8%. Apollo’s return on equity stands at 21.15%, higher than Max’s 14.74%.

Both stocks trade at premium valuations, with Apollo’s shares rising 88% in five years and Max’s surging 193%. Analysts believe expansion pipelines, medical tourism and premium healthcare demand will support long-term growth despite high price-to-earnings ratios. Apollo shows stronger efficiency, while Max leverages metro dominance.
