US investments in Indian securities have grown sharply over the past decade. Data from the US Treasury shows that holdings rose from 130 billion dollars in 2015 to 390 billion dollars in 2025. This marks a rise of nearly 200% and highlights India’s growing importance in global financial markets.

Most of the investment was in equities. Out of the total, 380 billion dollars were in Indian shares while 11 billion dollars were in long term debt. The preference for equities reflects confidence in India’s corporate growth and economic resilience.

India ranked 12th among 30 nations with significant US portfolio exposure. Cayman Islands topped the list with 3.07 trillion dollars, followed by the United Kingdom with 2 trillion dollars, Canada with 1.89 trillion dollars, Japan with 1.48 trillion dollars and Ireland with 1.18 trillion dollars.

The survey was conducted jointly by the US Treasury, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Federal Reserve Board. It measured total US foreign securities holdings at 19.3 trillion dollars in 2025.

India’s appeal has been supported by strong earnings, rupee stability and steady macroeconomic indicators. US portfolio holdings in China stood at 318 billion dollars, lower than India’s 390 billion dollars, showing India’s rising edge.

These figures exclude foreign direct investment in factories or infrastructure. They only cover portfolio holdings. The steady rise signals global trust in India’s markets and strengthens its case for deeper integration with global capital flows.
