India’s broking industry added more than 5 lakh active clients in August, signalling continued interest among retail investors despite market volatility. Groww led the growth among major brokers, adding around 2.23 lakh active clients during the month. Its client base rose to 1.33 crore from 1.31 crore in July, while its market share increased to 29.04% from 28.88%.

Among other major players, ICICI Securities added around 23,000 active clients, taking its total to 21.6 lakh. Dhan added about 20,000 clients and crossed the 11-lakh mark, while HDFC Securities gained around 16,000 clients to reach 13.5 lakh.
Kotak Securities and Motilal Oswal added around 10,000 and 9,000 active clients, respectively. Upstox remained largely stable, adding about 4,000 clients to reach 18.7 lakh.
SBI Securities was the only major broker in the list to report a decline. Its active client base fell by around 26,200 to 10.4 lakh in August.
The numbers highlight strong retail participation and growing competition in India’s digital broking space.
