India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections in August 2026 rose sharply to nearly ₹2 lakh crore, showing a 15% increase compared to the same month last year. This reflects strong momentum in tax revenues, supported mainly by import growth.

Gross GST revenue stood at ₹1.998 lakh crore, up from ₹1.74 lakh crore in August 2025. Net collections after refunds were ₹1.68 lakh crore, marking an 8.3% rise. Refunds surged to ₹31,795 crore, a 67.9% jump, which slowed net growth.

Import revenues grew 29% to ₹62,604 crore, while domestic GST collections rose 9.3% to ₹1.37 lakh crore. Due to higher refunds, net domestic revenue growth was limited to 3.4%.

From April to August in the current financial year, gross GST collections reached ₹10.43 lakh crore, an 11% rise. Net collections stood at ₹8.90 lakh crore, up 9%, while refunds totaled ₹1.53 lakh crore, showing a 23.8% increase.

State-wise performance varied. Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat, Karnataka and Kerala reported double-digit growth. Maharashtra saw moderate gains, while Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Goa recorded declines. Assam stood out with a sharp 162% rise.
