A passenger travelling on the New Delhi Rajdhani Express faced a distressing incident when her mangalsutra worth ₹60,000 and cash of ₹20,000 were stolen during the journey. She lodged a complaint and approached the Consumer Commission, claiming that Indian Railways had failed to provide adequate safety inside the train. After reviewing the case, the Commission directed Railways to pay ₹80,000 as compensation.
The Commission observed that Railways cannot deny responsibility when theft occurs inside its trains. It stressed that passenger safety is a fundamental duty of the service provider. The ruling highlighted that negligence in security arrangements amounts to deficiency in service. The compensation was ordered not only for the financial loss but also for the mental distress suffered by the passenger.
This case sets a strong precedent for passenger rights. It shows that travellers can seek legal remedies when their belongings are stolen due to inadequate protection. The judgment also sends a clear message to Railways to strengthen its security measures, including surveillance, patrolling, and better monitoring, to prevent such incidents in future.
The decision underlines that Railways’ responsibility goes beyond transporting passengers. It must ensure their safety throughout the journey. The ₹80,000 compensation reflects recognition of both material loss and emotional trauma, reinforcing accountability in public services.
