India’s economy is under strain as high oil prices, rising United States bond yields and foreign fund outflows weigh on the rupee. Policymakers must balance growth with inflation control while keeping the currency stable. Experts remain divided on the right course.

Oil prices are the biggest worry. Crude costs above $90 per barrel raise import bills, push inflation higher and reduce fiscal space. The government and oil companies have absorbed much of the burden, but if prices stay elevated, retail fuel hikes or higher spending may be unavoidable.

Foreign investors have withdrawn billions of dollars from Indian markets in recent months, adding pressure on the rupee. At the same time, global competition for capital has intensified, with technology giants investing nearly $1 trillion this year in artificial intelligence.

Some economists argue India should raise interest rates to attract capital. Suyash Choudhary of Bandhan Asset Management suggests lifting the repo rate to 6.25% to 6.5%. Others, like Sajjid Chinoy of JPMorgan, warn against aggressive hikes, saying the rupee should act as a shock absorber under inflation targeting. Soumya Kanti Ghosh of State Bank of India recommends reforms such as better hedging rules and tax incentives to encourage long‑term investment.

India’s challenge is clear. Policymakers must protect growth while ensuring the rupee remains resilient against global shocks.
