Supreme court decision delivers ₹5,250 crore refund to Amazon

Amazon has received a tariff refund of ₹5,250 crore after the United States Supreme Court struck down levies imposed during Donald Trump’s presidency. The company announced that eligible customers will automatically get refunds where tariff costs were passed on. For other cases, the funds will be used to keep prices affordable.

The refund was smaller than expected because Amazon had stocked goods before tariffs took effect and most items sold on its platform come from third‑party sellers who bear tariff costs directly. Many of these sellers had raised prices due to tariffs and are now filing their own refund claims.

The legal battle began after Trump’s administration imposed tariffs under emergency powers. Amazon initially stayed quiet, which led to a consumer lawsuit in Seattle demanding refunds. The company later confirmed its plan to distribute refunds where possible.

Amazon said direct refunds will be processed only when tariff charges can be clearly traced to customers. The remaining amount will support lower prices across its marketplace.

Other companies also benefited from the ruling. Apple reported a five percent earnings boost from similar refunds. The decision has created ripple effects across major importers, reshaping pricing strategies and easing costs for consumers.
