Will Adani Group be allowed to start an airline?

Adani Group’s ambition to enter the airline sector remains under review as the Civil Aviation Ministry examines contractual restrictions linked to airport operations. The minister clarified that there is no blanket ban on airport operators starting airlines, but specific concession agreements such as those for Delhi and Mumbai airports require close scrutiny before any approval.

Reports suggest Adani Airports had approached the Airports Authority of India earlier this year seeking waivers on restrictions that could allow the group to launch an airline. The communication reportedly highlighted interest from Adani Defence and Aerospace and related affiliates in investing in or controlling a scheduled airline.

The minister stated that while no general rule prevents airport operators from owning airlines, certain agreements contain clauses that must be respected. The government’s approach is to balance the interests of airport operators and aviation stakeholders while ensuring fair competition and avoiding conflicts of interest.

The ministry has not yet taken a final decision. Officials are carefully examining contractual provisions to ensure clarity and fairness. If approval is granted, Adani Group could expand its aviation footprint from airport management into full airline operations. Such a move would reshape India’s aviation landscape, but regulatory caution remains strong as the government weighs sectoral balance and contractual obligations.
