US bond yields are rising sharply, unsettling global markets. The Treasury announced a six billion dollar bond buyback to ease pressure, but investors remain doubtful. The 10‑year yield touched 4.83%, the highest since October 2023, while the 30‑year yield reached 5.29%, close to multi‑decade highs.

The surge is driven by heavy debt issuance, inflation worries, and oil prices above 100 dollars. America’s debt has crossed 40 trillion dollars, with annual interest costs already at 1.27 trillion dollars. The debt‑to‑GDP ratio stands at 124%, showing fiscal stress. The buyback plan, though larger than earlier operations, looks small compared to the scale of obligations.

Markets reacted negatively, with bond prices falling and yields rising after the announcement. Investors are demanding higher term premiums to hold US debt, reflecting skepticism about the Treasury’s measures. Inflation pressures from tariffs and geopolitical tensions such as the Iran conflict are adding to the strain.

For India and other emerging markets, rising US yields pose risks of foreign capital outflows. Global borrowing costs may climb, affecting loans, mortgages, and corporate debt. Analysts believe the Treasury’s move is more symbolic than structural, and yields may stay elevated, keeping financial markets under stress.
